Coordinators: Dr Charanjeet Kaur and Prof Prashant Kelkar

The Bachelor of Mass Media course is the second self financed course started by the college in the year 2000. It was started by the college in the very year in which it was introduced by the University of Mumbai. It has been headed by Dr S S Saksena initially and later on by Mr Subhash Athavale. Currently Dr Charanjeet Kaur and Prof Prashant Kelkar are the Coordinators of department.

The other full time faculty members of BMM are:
Prof Sucheta Gandhi (MA in English Literature and M Phil)
Prof Varsha Tilokchandani (MA in English Literature, and MBA)
Prof Girish Choudhary (MA in History)

In addition Expert Faculty from industry and the field are invited for specialized subjects as Visiting Faculty and for Guest lectures. Some of the eminent visiting faculty include Dr Harinarayan, Dr Narendra Vispute, Prof Swati Sable, Mr N Ganesh, and Prof Santosh Pathare. In house faculty includes the faculty from the conventional courses like, Prof Prashant Kelkar, Prof Vilas Gaikar and Prof Pradeep Gangurde.

Academic activities
The department offers the three-year Bachelors course in the field of Mass Media. In the First year of the course students are introduced to various aspects of study of social science such as Economics, Sociology, Political Science and skill based subjects such as Effective Communication Skill, Introduction to Computers. In the Second year of the course students are acquainted with Media related areas such as Organizational Behavior, Media Studies, Print Production and Photography and Introduction to Journalism. In the Third year students can specialse either in Journalism or Advertising.

An instructive practice of the department involves regular class room teaching, effectively assisted
by group discussions; debate sessions, Presentations by the students, Screening of Short films, documentaries, movies and various internal assignments conducted regularly. Various innovative and creative assignments, study tours, field visits, guidance lectures by the expert from industry are arranged regularly to broaden the horizon of the students and to get them industrial exposure.

Extra Curricular activities of the Department-
Faculties of the department take special effort under the guidance of Coordinators to train students and to facilitate their participation in various intra- collegiate and inter-collegiate competitions. Students of Mass Media regularly participate in MAMI festival, organization of Standard Charted Mumbai Marathon, Inter collegiate festivals such as Polaris festival by Wilson College, Blitzkrieg festival by K C College, Impressions festival by Vivekananda College etc. Anti Human Trafficking movement by Save the Children India Foundation. The Department also organizes an intercollegiate Festival “Entity”.

Students of the Mass Media do Photography and Video shooting and Reporting including Documentary making of all programs arranged by the college from time to time.

As a result of ongoing efforts by the department and students Mr. Sagar Bhadrige student of SYBMM won Best Actor award in the Youth Festival organized by the University of Mumbai, Bharati Kalani’s group of FYBMM and Sunil Jagnani’s group of SYBMM won Third and Fifth position respectively for their One-Minute short films on the issue of Human Trafficking in the competition organized by Save the Children India Foundation. Students of TYBMM won Third prize for EDITOLOGY at Polaris Festival of Wilson College. Rohit of TYBMM has bagged the 2nd prize in editing for his entry in the MAMI Festival this year. One of our students Chetna Israney was the University topper in BMM examinations in 2005-2006.

Community Outreach Activities by the Department
For political awakening among the residents of the city of Ulhasnagar, students of Mass Media had organized Social awareness Skit on the issue of “Right to Vote” at four different places in the city.

To cater to the creative urge of the students and spread social awareness department organizes annually a poster exhibition called “Envisage”. Posters exhibited in the program are on the social issues such as Women Empowerment through Education, Blood Donation, and Aids Awareness etc. It helps in spreading social awareness and sensitizing people towards different social aspects of society.

Study Tour
Department of Mass Media regularly organizes Study tour for all three classes, which enable students to get first hand exposure and to keep track of current trends of various aspects of Print media, E-Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Moviemaking and Advertising designing industry. To fulfill these objectives department has so far organized study tour to Times of India Printing Press in Mumbai, Lokmat Newspaper Press and PepsiCo manufacturing Unit in Nasik, All India Radio station in Mumbai and to Ramoji Film City at Hyderabad.

Alumni of the Department
Alumni of the department are making their presence felt in all Media related careers such as Print Journalism, E-Journalism, Photography, Ad-Designing, Media Marketing, Event Management Media Production etc. Many of them are working for prime print media publications like DNA, Mumbai Mirror, The Afternoon Dispatch and Courier, Indian Express and The Times of India.
