HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The Department of Economics was
established in the year 1965.The Dept. has progressed under stalwarts
likes Prof. S.R. Israney, Prof. Lavande and Prof. Deo till 1980.
Prof. N.O. Francis took over as H.O.D. of Economics in 1981.
The Dept.
of Business Economics was established, headed by Prof. K.R. Madhavan
in 1998.

MAIN ACTIVITIES: (Academic and Non-Academic): The Dept.
caters to the development of students of Arts and Commerce streams

IV. RESEARCH PROJECTS: The faculty has been actively
involved in enhancing the academic caliber by undertaking various
research-oriented activities:

Dr.
Manju Pathak has been conferred the Doctoral Degree
in Economics on “Socio Economic Contribution of
Sindhi Community in Maharashtra. (A case study of Ulhasnagar,
Thane, Khar and Chembur) in the year 2007-08.
She has undertaken MRP funded by University of Mumbai on “Invulnerability
of NRC workers” in the year 2003-04.
She has undertaken a project with Commissioner of UMC on “Jeans
Industry in Ulhasnagar” in the year 2007-08.

Prof.
Moni Alex is pursuing Ph.D. on “Globalization
– the Context for Assessing India’s Economic Performance”
since 2005-06.

Prof.
Indira Nair has completed MRP funded by University
of Mumbai on “Kudumshree – A Tool for Empowerment
of Poor Women in Kerela, a case study
of NHGS of Haripad Block”, in 2006. She
is pursuing MRP funded by University of Mumbai on “Role
of MIDC in Industrial Development in Ambernath Zone”
in 2009.

S.V.L. Anuradha and Prof. Ashwini Gokhale are jointly
pursuing MRP funded by University of Mumbai on “Micro
Finance – A Tool of Women’s Empowerment”:
A case study of Kalyan, Ambernath and Badlapur”
in 2009.

Prof.
Ashwini Gokhale
was selected to visit Clayton State University, Atlanta, USA
in 2008 under the International Exchange Programme between
Smt. C.H.M. College and S.S.U. Atlanta under the MOU for teaching
Programme in Economics.

Prof.
Vilas B. Gaikar has been actively working as NCC
officer in the college, since 2008. He has also actively
worked in the NSS unit of the college and
conducted Blood donation camps, literacy awareness campaigns,
Medical camps, village adoption scheme etc.

Prof.
Usha Oomman: has
been guiding students in research activities for the International
Economic Convention since Dec.2005.till date.

The
Dept. inculcates research, leadership and competitive qualities
amongst the students by motivating them to participate in
International Economic Convention held annually
under the aegis of HSN(C) Board. Mumbai on
current changing scenario of Indian Economy vis-à-vis
Globalization, having bagged excellent score in research writing
and communication skill.
V.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES:
The dept. takes initiative in motivating and encouraging students
to participate in Blood-donation, community street-plays, Rallies,
Seminars, Workshops, Civic awareness etc. organized by different
associations and centers of college.
VI.
CULTURAL/CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: The faculty is actively
involved in not only enriching the students academically but is
also instrumental in the promotion of overall personality development
of the students by motivating them to participate in various cultural
and co-curricular events like Chandi-Utsav, Youth Festivals, Singing
Competition, Essay Writing, Elocution, Debates, Quiz etc. at Intra
and Inter collegiate level.
