The Department of Mathematics of the College offers undergraduate programme in Mathematics. The department was founded in 1965 by Late Prof V R Kulkarni. He was instrumental in laying a strong foundation for the department and in setting high standards of teaching and learning for the students and faculty alike. Prof (Mrs) S B Kulkarni was the next head of the department who also later became the Vice Principal of the college.

With 9 teaching staff (2 MPhil and 5 NET/SET) and 2 non-teaching staff, the departmentt caters to nearly 1400 students of science and commerce. The dept offers courses in mathematics and computer programming and system analysis.

The current batch (2009-2010) of TYBSc mathematics has 47 students with 17 students joining the dept from other colleges, which is a consistent trend over the years.

Students are encouraged to participate in activities like Seminars, Projects/Exhibits, Quizzes and Wallpaper-Exponent, math skits at college/intercollegiate level. Conscious efforts are taken to inculcate in students the capacity for self-learning, hard work and independent thinking through tutorials, discussions, class room exercises on a regular basis. Four students were selected during last 5 years for MTTS(Mathematics Training and Talent Search) – a 4 week national level summer program organized by National Board for higher mathematics(NBHM) Attempt is made to make the learning of “abstractions in mathematics” an enjoyable one.

The department takes pride in its illustrious alumni and merit rankers at university examinations. The dept also takes equal pride and satisfaction in the positive transformation of weak students ,often coming from humble backgrounds during the three years of undergraduate programme.
Higher studies ---- MSc (Maths) at IIT’s and University of Mumbai, MCA, MBA, MS-BITS Pilani, MSc (Comp Sci), PG Diploma in Actuarial Science etc are pursued by at least 30% of the students.

The department participates actively in the various committees of the college like Examination (College & University), University Vigilance Squad, Admission, Youth Festival, Science Association, NSS, Magazine, IQAC, Chandi Utsav, Attendance, Post Graduate and Research Studies, Conference Committees, Gymkhana, Cultural and others.

The department is involved in Minor Research Projects funded by UGC and the University of Mumbai and in the “Design of Curriculum” committee appointed by University BOS in Mathematics.

The department has been pro-active in applying for grants from UGC for modern equipments like Interactive White Board, LCD Projector, Laptop, PC’s, Portable OHP etc. Technology is used in teaching – learning process.

The department every year on a Sunday, with staff and final year students happily, invigorates itself with exciting monsoon treks/ nature trails.

The department organized a University level workshop for teachers on ‘computational mathematics’ on 9th July,09 which had participants from an overwhelming 51 colleges.

The feedback (unsolicited) from the participants about the content and quality of the workshop is reassuring for the department’s belief in teamwork ,consistency, quality and enthusiasm .
