Post Graduate Studies and Research Development Committe (PGSR&D)

Chairperson: Dr Saraswati Patel

The Post Graduate Studies and Research Development Committee was conceptualised in 2003 in order to actively promote the culture of research in the College. Established under the leadership of Principal Dinesh Panjwani, with Dr Shalini Saksena as the Chairperson, it seeks to encourage teachers to take up research degrees, M Phil and PhD, to present papers in national and international forums in seminars, workshops and conferences and to participate in the organization of research oriented activities.

Dr Saraswati Patel took over as the Chairperson of the PGSRD Committee in January 2007. The Committee comprises of

  • teachers who hold a PhD degree

  • teachers recognized as guides for M Phil or PhD

  • one member from each department who is actively involved in research

  • teachers who have taken up Minor Research Projects

The Convener of the PGRD Committee is the Principal. Currently, Dr Milind Vaidya is the Convener of the PGSRD Committee.

The Research aspect of the College has been strengthened by the initiatives of this Committee. Today, 33 teachers of the College hold a PhD degree, 26 of whom have acquired it in service. 09 of these teacher-scholars have been awarded the Teacher Fellowship under the Faculty Improvement Programme of the University Grants Commission under the X Plan.

The UGC has awarded 14, and the University of Mumbai has awarded 20 Minor Research Projects to the faculty of the College under the X Five Year Plan. 26 MRPs have been competed in the past three years. The College has 07 Research Departments (English, Hindi, History, Sindhi, Microbiology, Botany, and Physics) and 52 research papers have been presented at the national level and 08 on the international level at Conferences, 08 Teachers have published books in the last three years. 12 teachers of the college are recognised as Guides for PhD, 15 for M Phil and 12 for M Sc by research.

The College has organised 21 Workshops, Seminars and Conferences in the last four years. A major International Conference in September 2007 was organised by the UGC sponsored Women’s Studies Centre and the Gandhian Studies Centre of the College in collaboration with the Department of Adult Education and Extension, University of Mumbai on the theme Empowerment of Women through Adult Education. About 150 delegates from 14 nations and from all over India participated. 42 peer reviewed Papers were presented by scholars and functionaries of Gender Studies and Adult Education, out of which 06 papers that were received were from UK, Mauritius, Malawi, Iran, Israel and Afghanistan. The Abstracts of all the papers received were published. The Peer Review Team included scholars from US and UAE.

The only CPCSEA-registered Animal House providing facilities for Animal Breeding and Experimentation and well-developed Botanical Garden for Horticulture Experiments. It is the only College in the University of Mumbai with these facilities.
Faculty Exchange and Research Programs with Clayton University, West Georgia, USA, CENNP-GUJCOST, Department of Physics, Bhavnagar University and Kaivalyadhama, the Internationally renowned Yoga Institute.
Two Survey Study Projects have been undertaken under the UMC-CHM Initiatives “Clean Ulhasnagar-Healthy Ulhasnagar” and “Education for All”. The Reports, written by Principal Dinesh Panjwani, have been submitted to the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. More than 30,000 families have been covered by the student research trainees in these two surveys. Each of the surveys was completed in 2 days with the help of the 6000 students and the officials of the UMC.

The activities of the PGSRD Committee:

  • Seminars are held every month or as the time permits by

    • Teachers Pursuing MPhil or PhD degree

    • T eachers who have undertaken Minor research projects of the UGC and the University of Mumba

    • Teachers who are engaged in active research as research Guides

    • Teachers who are recipients of research grants from various funding agencies, including the UGC and the UOM.

    • Teachers who have collaborative activities with research institutes, corporations, state government and NGOs.

  • The PGRD Committee circulates and displays Notices regarding research, consultancies, seminars, conferences, Faculty on the staff notice board.
  • The Committee plays a pro-active role in encouraging faculty to register for M Phil and PhD degrees and to take up Research projects of the UGC and the UOM.
  • The Committee continuously updates the availability of research projects from various funding agencies like University of Mumbai, UGC, DST, DBT, ICMR, ICSSR, MMRDA through circulars and one to one contact with the Head of the Departments. The PGRD committee Chairperson and the members throughout the year motivate, help the teachers in application for funds and also in preparation of other documents. A number of teachers are awarded research projects funds from the above mentioned Funding Agencies.
  • The PGRD committee regularly conducts seminars in Biological discipline with Microbiology, Botany and Biotechnology departments participating. Research students present their plan of work, work in progress, synopsis and the final results before submission of thesis to the University.
  • Teachers give presentations on their MRPs and other on-going research projects which are in collaboration with outside agencies.
  • The PGRD committee discussed the proposal from YCMO University for starting M Phil in Environmental Sciences. The Centre ran the M Phil Course in English, Marathi, Library Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Economics and Psychology for two years.
  • A detailed project proposal was submitted to FIST (DST) for upgrading the infrastructure of the different Science laboratories and also for procuring various instruments.

Future Plans:
The research laboratories will work towards

  • Display of the list of research projects.
  • Identification of the future research projects to be undertaken.
  • Publishing the list of research papers published/presented.
  • Maintaining a “Theme Book” which would contain fresh ideas/interest for future projects.
  • Preparation of a brochure which would highlight the research activities of the departments.
  • Encouragement of Teachers to go in for publication of research papers in local, National and international journals.
