Science Association

Chairperson: Prof Meena Meghrajani
  • An extremely vibrant association of the college It has been successfully enthusing the students about Science for more than Two decades, nurturing students by scientific talents and thereby also shaping their overall personality. The Science Associations provide a platform for the expression of the scientific spirit of the students.
  • Science is the effort to understand how the physical universe works, with observable evidence as the basis of that understanding; the way of understanding the world.
  • Learning science beyond the classroom has been the aim of this association
  • The light of science is something that the science association has tried to keep alive at a time when the dividing lines between science, technology, social systems human values and education appear to be dissolving and merging.
  • The association headed by a faculty , with a committee of faculty as members functions basically with the efforts of a large number of students. This enables development of self learning and self adaptation, interpersonal relations and participation
  • The inauguration of the association activities has been taking place at the hands of eminent persons like Dr Badrinath Athani ( All India Institute of Physical Medicine), Dr Ajai Singh(Renowned MedicalPractitioner) , Dr Shirish Pathare (HomiBhabha Centre for Science Education) Dr S.K Patil (BARC).
  • The ‘Intercollegiate Competitions’ held in collaboration with Nehru Science Centre has indeed been a matter of great prestige and expansion..The concept started with Prin Dinesh Panjwani. The event consists of various competitions. Quiz Competitions have sharpened young minds to acquire intellectual competitiveness. Indeed the Junior college quiz competition ‘Aavishkaar’ has received overwhelming response with colleges from all over Mumbai, Thane district and beyond,.Nearly sixty colleges participate. The ‘Elimination rounds’ and the ‘Final Rounds’ are held at Nehru Science Centre whereas the ‘Semifinal Round’ is held at SMT Chandibai Himathmal Mansukhani College. The quiz consists of multiple choice questions , photographic identifications , computer assisted scientific puzzles etc. It is a tough task to break through the practical mind boggling quiz devised by the scientists of the centre.
  • Aavesh the intercollegiate skit competition too receives overwhelming response . It is a way to explain science with entertainment. It provides a good platform for students from science faculty to show case their acting talents along with passing a scientific message
  • Srujan has been the intercollegiate project exhibition. Innovations in setting up scientific working projects in form of models brings to surface creativity of the students likely to convert them into young scientists.
  • The ‘Lecture Series’ delivered by learned personalities coming from presitigious backgrounds like BARC, TIFR, HomiBhabha Centre, enlighten students with firsthand knowledge.Dr Aniket Sule (TIFR) , , Dr Bhavana Motwani , Dr Prema Gurbaxani are some of them.
  • Important and historical days like National science day, World AIDS day , are locally participated by conducting relevant events like ‘Poster Competitions’ , ‘Presentations’ and ‘Informative Lectures’.
  • Fascinating experiments of ‘Physics’ by Prof B.D Chakradeo are a regular feature
  • ‘Awareness’ on various scientific but domestic aspects , the students of the association bring home by carrying out ‘Street plays’.
  • The students are taken for Visits to various Research Institutes and their constituting laboratories. ‘The Indian Institute of Technology’ ‘Forensic Sciences Laboratory’ ,’National Chemical Laboratory’, ‘Inter University Centre for Astronomy’ are some of them. The authorities extend a warm welcome. There the students observe , experience and use various equipments and materials that they would otherwise be reading in their books only.
  • A part of the annual celebration of college the ‘ChandiUtsav’ has an important component namely ‘Science Exhibition’ . Both the Junior college and the Degree college participate in it by putting up about two hundred ‘Project Exhibits’All this gives a feeling of a true ‘VigyaanUtsav’.
  • A literary compilation in form of a souvenier , that includes scientific articles, poems, cartoons, etc written by students brings out their skills in yet another dimension.
  • Workshops on ‘Mushroom cultivation’ , candle making, toy making, as well as ‘Career guidance’ inculcate vocational abilities.
The present year has started with a lecture series by a ‘Cambridge University’ Alumni , Dr S.Barve with a presentation on ‘ Charles Darwin ‘, as a mark of respect in the event of his second centenary year . As a mark of participation to ‘International year of Astronomy ‘ an intercollegiate essay competition has been initiated .
    The other forthcoming events are:
o A documentary film on ‘Awareness of Science’
o Documentary films on Environment and Health Awareness
o Visits to Research Laboratories and Industries
