Smt. Chandibai Himathmal Mansukhani College, one of the oldest Higher Education Institutions, it was established in 1965 thanks to the visionary efforts of Vidyasagar K.M. Kundnani and Hotchand G. Advani. The college has registered sustained progress from 265 students over the period and emerged as one of the reputed multi faculty colleges in the suburbs of Mumbai city. The college attracts students from Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts and some from abroad also. It has the distinction of having produced several very eminent personalities.

The college is conveniently located near Ulhasnagar railway station. Today it has the strength of about 10,000 UG students, 295 PG students and 1518 in self-supporting degree programmes. At present the college offers about 34 programmes including UG & PG. There are some part-time scholars working for Ph.D. The institution is a grant-in-aid linguistic minority college, and it got U.G.C recognition under 2f and 12B.

The College has a well-qualified teaching staff. The College has a Central Library in addition to the Departmental libraries, in this speedy age of the 21st century; one would like to have information at his/ her finger tips. The academics library of this college is equipped with a huge collection of books, periodicals and magazines of various subjects, caters to the needs of students and staff.

Orientation is given to the students at entry point about the usage of the library and the services provided to them. This helps the students to know about library collection, how they can make use of &  to know rules and procedures of library.  

The glamour of huge knowledge bank got destroyed due to Huge Deluge destroyed about 80,000 books, bound volumes of journals, non book material like CD’s and DVD’s on  26th July 2005.

The books, Journals and magazines of our library are used by staff and students. The library has a collection of 73277 books till 31 January 2011.

There was an addition of 1436 books from U.G.C. 10th plan for undergraduates. The library subscribes to journals on different subjects from the academic year 2005 – 2005 to 2009 – 2010 the total number of journals subscribed are 106, 106, 126, 71 & 148 respectively and several Magazines of general interest to cope up with the information demand.

These Magazines and Journals are of great help to the students who have to work on project as a part of their syllabi on different topics, in addition we also subscribe to 20 news papers in four languages of national and local level.

   

Users:

It being an academic library, the users are mainly students, teaching and non teaching staff members. About 35 to 40 percent students from Degree College borrow books regularly and about 75% students make use of the reference section regularly.

News Papers in 4 languages, Magazines and Journals are referred by students and staff frequently.  University and Board question papers of past three to five years are used regularly by maximum students.

   

Library Services

   

Book- Bank Facility:

The library provides book bank facility to degree college students. Every year, the library purchases 800 to 1200 books in this scheme every year.  These are mainly text-books and they are issued to students for entire academic year. A maximum of three books are provides to each students under this scheme.

A deposit of Rs. 40 is collected from each student and the same is returned at the end of the year. Year wise chart to show number of books purchased and number of students availed the Book Bank facility:

Reading Room:

The reading room is attached to main library & can accommodate about 210 students at a time, total area of reading room is about 2000 sq. ft including a lounge of about 100 sq. ft. for referring magazines, and teachers section of about 100 sq. ft. Students have free access to the magazines and the newspapers which enables them to collect first hand information on current subjects. Internet facility is provided on one computer which helps the students  to get required information on their area of interest .about 1,500 students visit the library daily for referring News papers, Magazines and books. Library is kept open for 13 hours from 7 am to 8 pm on every working day.

   
Notice Board:

To keep students informed about library services, library rules, issuing systems, book bank facility, good articles, intercollegiate events, currier opportunities etc. Notices are displayed on the notice board.

The students are also kept informed about the new additions in the library by putting up the list of new books added to library collection subject wise.

Lending Section:

Every member of library is provided with Readers Ticket. For Third year, unaided and post graduate students TWO Readers Tickets are provided. This facility is to fulfill the knowledge thrust of students and to provide them more opportunity to read about the subject. Members of the library take benefit of this service and issue the books regularly for home reading.

   
Library Committee:

The library committee, with Mrs. J.S. Ozarkar as chairperson held 2 meetings. The discussion was about exiting rules and regulations, area of library and its beautification.  The need of human resource in the library and the space constraint in the library was discussed. It was discussed and decided to recommend for a total restructuring of the library.

The committee also put forward many healthy recommendations like keeping separate files for question paper sets, Journal, periodicals etc. these recommendations have gone along way in improving the functioning of the library .

I will be failing in my duty if I will not place on record gratitude to our principal Prof. Dinesh Panjwani, who always been with us in all endeavors. It is with his support I could function even with limited facilities. I take this opportunity to thank our Vice-Principals, Heads of Departments who always help in improving the collection of reference sources. My sincere thanks are due to all my teaching colleague & non teaching staff for their active support and co-operation. I thank to all the dear students who show keen interest in utilizing the library services through its resources and for careful handling of resources. I finally thank Library staff for their co-operation and constant support.
